What's In a Session - Babies

I've discovered that I love love love doing baby sessions. I'm not sure why that is but I find I love getting a sneak peak into new family dynamics and seeing first-time parents as they deal with diaper changes, feedings, and new baby reactions.

So how does a Baby Session work? There are a lot of factors...

When? That's up to you. Any time from when your bundle of joy makes their first appearance (um, I don't really want to be in the delivery room with you, though), through their first year. I think the sooner, the better. You don't want to miss out on that newborn look and feel that only lasts for so long. But whatever stage you pick, you'll get something unique: the sweetness of the newborn baby, the expressiveness as they're learning to sit up on their own, or the joy as they take their first steps.

How long? I tend to schedule Baby Sessions for about two hours - we may not take that long, but I don't want any of us to feel rushed in case it does. We make time for feedings, changes, and playtime. You should note, I don't stop for feedings; it's such a tender time and always makes for intimate photos. If you're breastfeeding, I'll ask first before shooting - not too worry, they're tasteful and discrete and you get to decide who sees them.

What to wear? For Mom and Dad, something comfortable without a lot of logos or distractions. You can dress up or down, or even change in the middle of the shoot. As for baby, you probably have lots of adorable outfits - not to worry, we can use several of them. If it's a newborn, I like to start with some undressed shots of the baby so it's best not to have baby all dolled up when I arrive - perhaps just in a diaper and a onesy. Remember to have extra outfits on hand just in case.

Location, location, location... Again, the location is up to you. I like to take shots of the baby in your home and will use several locations - your room (little baby on a big bed, always adorable!), baby's room, living room, back yard, wherever. Of course, if you want to head to the local park or another area that's meaningful to your family, let's do it (we'll work in the shade to protect baby).

Who? That can be a tough one. Baby and parents, of course. Are there siblings? We can focus on the baby but get shots with the older siblings and everyone together as a family. If the shoot is just for baby and parents, it might be best to have the older siblings out on an excursion with Grandma.

That should answer some of your questions. Of course, we'll go over all the details before we do the shoot so if there are any more questions, just let me know.

What's in a Session?

I'm not sure I really have a typical session, but I've had some people asking how it goes and what types of sessions I do.

I love taking pictures (but I guess that's obvious). I'll do babies, families, maternity, engagements, Just Because, First Communion, birthdays, anniversaries, prom, graduation, entertainers... you name it! I may do more specific "What's in a Session" posts to give you ideas for some of the different types of sessions I do.

I like to think if you've booked a session with me, you'll have seen some of my work and will have an idea of my style. Give me an idea of what you'd like and we'll get down to business.

Sessions are about an hour and are normally for a family of up to four people. But don't be afraid if you have more than four - we can discuss it and see what we can work out.

You generally get to pick the location. It can be at your home, the beach, the Dingle, the park, the local schoolyard, the waterfront, Public Gardens, the nearby Farmers' Market. If you don't have a specific location in mind, we can narrow down the list together and come up with something perfect.

Hurricane...

Apparently, Hurricane Bill is on his way. I'm one of those people who will be hitting up the grocery store at some point today to ensure I can make it through in case we lose power.

I think I dread the grocery store more than the hurricane. I avoid the grocery store at all costs on the weekend - everyone else is there and people are crazy when they're shopping in a crowded grocery store. I once had someone yell at me because I was in the way - um, I stopped to allow an older person to exit the aisle. I still wish I had turned to the moron who yelled at me and said something to him, but I was in shock that my being polite to someone else would infuriate him. I mean really, it's groceries, chill, relax, try not to be an idiot.

And so I will muster up all of my courage and venture out and pick up all my necessary supplies.
*let's be real... by supplies, I mean snacks*

This will be my third hurricane here in the city: Edward, Juan, and now Bill. Figures, they're all boys!

Wish me luck...

Chick Flicks...

I've been such a bad blogger - with editing and shooting and just trying to cope with the heat, the poor blog hasn't even crossed my mind.

Tonight I took a night off from it all and headed to an air-conditioned movie theatre to see Julie & Julia. Of course, it's a movie about a blog so I left the theatre with considerable guilt and a vow to some day blog every day for a month. I don't know which month yet, maybe one next year. ;-)

As for the movie, it was pretty good; I'd give it about a 7 out of 10 stars. Maybe a 6 - good, but somehow not completely satisfying, as though there were something missing toward the end.

What has surprised me in the last few movies I've gone to is the choice of new movie trailers they have been showing. I'm your typical chick flick girl; if I'm watching a chick flick, chances are good I'll be back to see another one at a later date. I'm not coming back to watch a thriller or anything that has me remotely on the edge of my seat. So why show me a preview of The Stepfather? Or the Surrogates? Shutter Island?

I think it's a safe bet that all the older ladies at tonight's show won't be going to see these movies either. I spent the better part of the previews looking at my popcorn and avoiding the action-packed teasers.

But that's just me.

Back to the grind. I have some upcoming posts I'm excited to share... a wedding, a family shoot, and some babies! Soon, I promise. Until then, maybe I'll just share my movie reviews.

Just a peak...

from yesterday's fabulous wedding...

~Kare~

Almost up and running...

but not quite. I have a few more things to tweak on the pc before I'm back to normal. It would have been easier had I been born with a need to know technology instead of the need to photograph. :-)

Soon.
