Mom's Chili | Halifax, NS

Since Jason likes my chili, I've made it a few times - and it is a hit!  Chili is chili, I'm sure every recipe is pretty similar but since we really like Mom's chili recipe, I thought I'd share...

Ingredients:

2 Cups chopped onions

3/4 Cup green pepper

2 lbs ground beef

1 - 28 oz can red kidney beans (I usually use two of the smaller cans, rinsed)

2 - 19 oz can tomatoes (we like the Italian stewed tomatoes, sometimes I throw in an extra can just for fun)

1 small can tomato paste

3 tbsp chili powder

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp pepper

2 tbsp vinegar

1 tsp each:  garlic powder, marjoram, oregano, cumin, red cayenne powder (I don't measure any of the spices, I just shake til I think it's good)

Brown onions, peppers, and beef (pour off excess fat).  While I'm doing that on the stove, I throw everything else into the slow cooker.  Add onions, peppers, and beef to the slow cooker once they're cooked and let it all simmer for four hours (good luck with that - we usually start testing it after an hour).

We Are Family - Today's Fun Family Session | Halifax, NS Family Photography

How much fun was today's family session! 
We started with a little swinging action in the backyard,
headed to the Dingle for some cool summer breezes, and then back home
for some fast-action bikeriding wheelies!

What's in a Session?

I'm not sure I really have a typical session, but I've had some people asking how it goes and what types of sessions I do.

I love taking pictures (but I guess that's obvious). I'll do babies, families, maternity, engagements, Just Because, First Communion, birthdays, anniversaries, prom, graduation, entertainers... you name it! I may do more specific "What's in a Session" posts to give you ideas for some of the different types of sessions I do.

I like to think if you've booked a session with me, you'll have seen some of my work and will have an idea of my style. Give me an idea of what you'd like and we'll get down to business.

Sessions are about an hour and are normally for a family of up to four people. But don't be afraid if you have more than four - we can discuss it and see what we can work out.

You generally get to pick the location. It can be at your home, the beach, the Dingle, the park, the local schoolyard, the waterfront, Public Gardens, the nearby Farmers' Market. If you don't have a specific location in mind, we can narrow down the list together and come up with something perfect.

I Love My Job

... not my day job, of course. I mean, it's okay and I work with some great people and I'm glad I have it *ahem*in case my boss is reading this*ahem* but it's the other job that I love. The one where I get to go on adventures and meet new people.

I am shy by nature; shy and afraid of the unknown. I was the little girl who clung to her mother on the first day of school, the one who needed someone to walk with her to the corner store because there might be people there, the one who would stand in the corner and watch other people instead of joining in and meeting someone new. I never fully outgrew that little girl. I've changed and grown up, but instinctively I'd rather sit on the sidelines and hope no one notices me.

But put a camera in my hands and that little girl disappears. Since I've started on my little photography journey I've met some great people I'd otherwise never have known. I love that I get a little glimpse into their lives, into their corner of the world. And that I get to pause this little moment in time for them, for who they are right now, to remember years down the road.

Today I got to meet this little girl. She will never be the little girl I was so many years ago. I walked into the house and instantly we were friends. She looked at me with her big eyes and talked about Dora, having her toenails painted, and the birthday party she was going to later this afternoon. But, really, she had me at "You're here to take our picture!"



So much fun. I'll do a proper blog of her pictures in the next few days, this one shot of attitude will have to do for now.

A Penny Saved...

The nephew decided today would be a good day to count his pennies. As they say, a penny saved is a penny earned...


















He ended up with about $9.00 - enough to take his aunt out for lunch. Maybe next time I'm there for a visit, I'll mention it. He's a saver so he'll likely still have it.

Here come the teen years...

This photo is from a photoshoot I did last summer. This is Nick; he's a pretty cool kid. He was up for just about anything - so long as there was no one else around.

He also just happens to be my nephew. And today is his birthday.









This is the two of us in the fall, 2008. I still don't know how he got taller than me.

Happy Birthday, Nick. I love you. Remember... you promised to take care of me when I get old(er).
